Home From the Hospital: The First 48 Hours

Illustration of B the bee for Home From the Hospital: The First 48 Hours

Before B could fly, B was a tiny larva in a warm cell — and the hive did very little except keep things warm, fed, and quiet. Your first 48 hours can be that simple.

What actually matters

Feeding, sleep surface, skin-to-skin, and a car seat installed correctly. Everything else is optional. Skip the scented welcome baskets: fragrance blends can contain undisclosed phthalates, so choose fragrance-free for anything touching newborn skin.

The short bag

Two organic cotton kimono bodysuits, a swaddle, fragrance-free diaper cream, a simple balm for you, and the car seat. That’s it.

Study glowThe AAP continues to recommend skin-to-skin contact right after birth for temperature, glucose, and breastfeeding support (AAP guidance, reaffirmed 2022–2025).
