Organic Cotton vs Bamboo: The Label Decoder
B reads every label in the galaxy. Here’s the cheat sheet.
PANEL 1
B holds two tags like star maps.
“GOTS here, OEKO-TEX there.”
PANEL 2
A tag says ‘bamboo’ in sparkles.
“Viscose in a costume?”
PANEL 3
B checks the certificate number.
“Verified. Nice.”
Step by step
- GOTS = organic fiber + restricted processing chemicals (gold standard for cotton).
- OEKO-TEX Standard 100 = finished product tested for listed harmful substances.
- ‘Bamboo’ is usually viscose/rayon — chemically processed; look for OEKO-TEX or FSC/lyocell processes.
- Avoid ‘wrinkle-free’, ‘stain-resistant’ or ‘water-repellent’ finishes on baby textiles.
- Wash before first wear.
Study glowFTC has taken action against companies labeling rayon as ‘bamboo’ without disclosure (FTC Textile Act enforcement).
